Flickr Photo Album Link

For those of you who have asked for more pictures of Simone - we are happy to oblige. We are going a little photo crazy around here, trying to capture her in those elusive times when she is awake - but not the 1 a.m. screaming for the last 2 hours awake. Pictures of that nightly event may put the fear of parenthood in you. The books we've been frantically consulting assure us it won't last forever. It might just feel like it. Nevertheless, we are surviving. And Simone has put on a bunch of weight in the last week after a slow start. I don't know where she gets her delicate appetite - it's not from me! Mostly I can't wait until she gets a little bigger so we can start dressing her in the cool clothes friends and family have sent. She will be a much better dresser than I could ever hope to be.
The link to our Flickr page is here.
Feel free to assure she is as cute as we think she is. And expect it to be updated often...
Yours, with bags under our eyes,
The New Parents

Welcome Simone!

Simone Marie Sweet-Chavez has finally arrived! She was born on January 13th at 6:16 AM, and she was 6 pounds 14 ounces and 20 inches long. Today is her one-week birthday, a milestone that we are happy to have made it to. Here are some recent photos of her (from yesterday and this morning):

It snowed for the first time this winter in Durham last night, and we took her for her first walk around the neighborhood while it was snowing. We dressed her in a warm outfit that resulted in this hands-up pose. I knew that having children would be challenging, but I didn't realize how funny it could be as well.

We took her to the pediatrician this week and she seems to be doing very well so far. Kyla's mom will be here in a week to help us out as I will be going back to work at that time. I'm not looking forward to work at all, so her timing will be very good!

Here I am with Simone at our first Sunday morning breakfast with chocolate chip pancakes. Coffee, newspaper, pancakes, and now an extra cute baby.

We will start a Flickr photo album soon with a lot more pictures of her. Thank you to everyone who has checked in with us or called or mailed something to us in the past couple of weeks. This has been very good for us as we live far away from most of you all.

We'll have more than you ever wanted to know about Simone posted again soon.

No news is...no news.

Let me cut right to the chase: there is no baby yet. On the outside, that is. According to my stomach There Is Very Much a Baby.
If this baby was a library book, using Durham County Library's current fine structure, the baby totally owes us 50 cents and counting...
We were due on the 5th but of course that is a guess, with a give or take two weeks on either side kind of date. The further we get from the Holidays the better, I suppose, as no kid wants to try and have a birthday party with Christmas trees and New Years confetti still sprinkled around.
Also, The Kid may have been waiting for Uncle Michael to come and visit and return to Germany, so as not to frighten him with their baby-like antics. We had a great visit, making him eat hush puppies and black-eyed peas and go on long walks around Durham to bring on labour. Which did not work.
A visit to the mid-wife yesterday confirmed no dilation or other tell-tale signs at this point, but an ultrasound did confirm the whole ten fingers and ten toes deal. Phew. She offered to let us in on the sex too but with only 9 days max to go, why cave now? If nothing happens in the interim, we do have an induction scheduled for the 19th. Capricorn or bust! But we'll be sure to let you all know if there is any news - it is so nice to know that with all the babies and problems in the world, our friends and family really are waiting to hear about Baby Sweet. Come on kid, the people are waiting....
Hopefully some real news soon!

Quiet Yuletide

It's been a quiet Christmas season here at Casa Sweet-Chavez. If you have been an inadvertent victim of (mostly Kyla's) radio silence, please forgive. Crossing the finish lines at work and school felt like giant milestones for me and I kind of collapsed for a few weeks to rest and read and be silent. (Speaking of giant, check out the photos below as we are only a few days away from the January 5th due date. Every stage of this game I have wondered "How could I get much bigger?" - and then I do. )

Waiting for a baby is an odd feeling, which may have led to a need for hibernation as well. Exciting yes, but scary too as you are left with plenty of time consider: just how is my life about to change in every way, shape and form? Here's a little peek at our room and bassinet where we imagine the baby will be sleeping for some time - the nursery undergoes daily transformation and pics will be duly posted in time, but as you might imagine, it's chock full of vintage Fisher Price toys, books and lots of color. Friends and family have been incredibly generous this holiday season and helped us stock our house and feel a little more prepared - thank you so much. We will let you all know as soon as there is any baby news at all but so far, we just continue to settle in and wait....

Happy New Year to all! 2008 is sure to be interesting....
